Part-Time Economic Development Coordinator Position Available

The Municipality of Highlands East is currently seeking a part-time Economic Development Coordinator in the Administration Department.

We have extended this job listing until Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

This is a part-time position with a $25.94 per hour rate of pay as per CUPE Local 4416 Collective Agreement and will have up to 30 hours of work per week, varied days of the week.

Overview

The Economic Development Coordinator will report to the CAO/Treasurer or designate and will be responsible for providing assistance in overseeing Community Economic Development opportunities in the municipality through promotion of tourist activities to the area, market Highlands East and assist with management and supervision of a Highlands East Tourism/Information Centre.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Six (6) months Municipal Experience in Community Economics and Development.
  • A degree or diploma in Business Administration, Marketing, Tourism, Communication, Environmental Sciences or Public Relations, would be an asset.
  • Valid G License (in good standing) and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
  • Proficiency in computer applications (including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good record keeping skills.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail and provide strategic thinking.
  • Awareness of community and economic development principles and strategies, programs, and tools.
  • General knowledge of organizations, industry associations and government programs related to the economic development industry.

The Economic Development Coordinator is expected to work inside and outside. Typical working hours during the summer months will be 30 hours. Weekend work will be a requirement. During the winter months, weekly hours will be up to 30 hours, varied days of the week. Weekend work may be a requirement.

Primary Function

The Economic Development Coordinator will report to the CAO/Treasurer or designate and will be responsible for providing assistance in overseeing Community Economic Development opportunities in the municipality through promotion of tourist activities to the area, market Highlands East and assist with management and supervision of a Highlands East Tourism/Information Centre.

Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Reviews economic development grant opportunities and assists with grant preparations.
  • Assists the CAO/Treasurer and Council in Strategic Plan review.
  • Engages with multiple volunteers.
  • Maintains various municipal tourism databases.
  • Provides updates to the webmaster for municipal social media and website accounts with municipal and community events and/or initiatives.
  • Provides support to the CAO/Treasurer and Council to grow and retain business and recreational outdoor activities.
  • Provides support to the CAO/Treasurer and Council to identify and foster community economic development opportunities.

Geocaching, Trails & Mineral Claims

  • Investigate trail initiatives through review of the municipal Trails Strategy Initiative.
  • Assist with trail maintenance & inspections.
  • Assists with geocache maintenance.
  • Install and monitor signage, trail counters, and geocaches.
  • Assists with exploration of the Highlands East mineral claims.

Tourism/Marketing

  • Municipal contact to the public regarding Highlands East tourism and points of interest.
  • Managing and keeping current a Highlands East Information Centre.
  • Maintains a visitor log.
  • Maintains statistical data on all visitors to the Centre.
  • Provides guidance to summer employment staff;
  • Assists with initiating new tourism promotional items.
  • Assists with preparing tourist destination packages.
  • Promotes the community to expand economic development opportunities.
  • Promotes community events.
  • Promotes municipal events and assists with preparations including Canada Day and the Santa Claus Parade.
  • Assists with developing brochures and promotional materials.
  • Assists with initiating beautification projects throughout the municipality including wayfinding strategies and initiatives.
  • Attends and helps organize various trade fair/conference events and other functions that help to promote Highlands East.

Skills

  • Proficiency in computer applications (including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good record keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of and skill base in clerical functions is required. 
  • Establish and maintain respectful and effective working relationships with members of staff, Council, community groups, and local businesses. 
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail and provide strategic thinking.
  • Awareness of community and economic development principles and strategies, programs, and tools.
  • General knowledge of organizations, industry associations and government programs related to the economic development industry.
  • Frequent short periods of computer & technology usage.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Grade 12 education
