Summer Student Employment Opportunities

We are currently recruiting students for summer job opportunities for the 2025 summer season.

If you are currently enrolled in secondary school or a post-secondary program and will be returning to school in the fall of 2025, you are encouraged to apply! 

Most positions listed above are available from the beginning of May through to the end of August for a total of 16 weeks. The Lifeguard positions are for a total of 8 weeks only.

  • (1) Cemetery Database Student (Parks & Property Department – 16 weeks; 35 hours/week)
  • (1) Information Centre Student (Economic Development Department – 16 weeks; 35 hours/week)
  • (2) Summer Landfill Attendants (Public Works Department – 16 weeks; 35 hours/week)
  • (4) Various Lifeguard Positions (Summer Swim Program – 8 weeks)

Please note, for positions where you may be required to drive in the execution of your duties, a Class G2 or G Driver's Licence is mandatory. You will also be required to provide an acceptable driver's abstract and a criminal reference check.

Summer Parks & Recreation Attendant

This is a seasonal position that will run from May 12 to August 29, 2025 (16 weeks) with typical work hours on varying days throughout the week, including weekends (35 hours/week). Requires working Saturdays. This position has a $17.20/hour rate of pay.

Position Details

The Parks & Recreation Attendant will report to the Property Supervisor. Students are to assist in the Parks & Property Department performing interior & exterior maintenance of municipal buildings & parks properties & garbage collection.

Duties

  • Mow and trim grass, cut trees, clear brush, and maintain ball diamonds, tennis courts and cemetery properties.
  • Perform manual labour using various tools (i.e., shovel, rake, hand tools).
  • Pick up garbage at all parks and cemeteries.
  • Perform interior maintenance functions, including clean and polish windows, mirrors, and glass doors, wash or vacuum floors, clean toilets and dust washrooms, dressing rooms, office walls and baseboards, as well as an ability to paint.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Hold a valid G2 or G driving license;
  • Ability to operate riding lawn mower and weed eater;
  • Capability of driving a vehicle while pulling a loaded trailer with lawn equipment, wood, gravel, etc. Ability to back up the vehicle also; 
  • Perform general maintenance care of all equipment and vehicles as required;
  • WHMIS Training
  • First Aid Training
  • Any other relatable certificates will be considered an asset.

Cemetery Database Student

This is a seasonal position that will run from May 12 to August 29, 2025 (16 weeks) with typical work hours Monday to Friday (35 hours/week) with an $18.00/hour rate of pay.

Position Details

The Cemetery Database Student will support the Parks and Property Department. Working under the direction of the Property Supervisor and Municipal Clerk, the Cemetery Database Student will collect and verify cemetery data. The student will be responsible for verifying grave and headstone information onsite and ensuring accuracy in the municipal cemetery database. Collection and verification to be done through the use of a tablet application and laptop by comparing municipal paper documentation with electronic records. This information will assist with facilities and grounds management, records management, internment planning, and locating existing internments.

Duties

  • Assist with collecting cemetery field data by using tablet application;
  • Verify cemetery field data with available municipal records (paper or electronic);
  • Document and verify various grave spaces utilizing the cemetery software;
  • Accurately track, retrieve, and archive files; apply your knowledge and/or experience of electronic file and paper management systems to secure, classify, manage and store documents.
  • Input data accurately in cemetery software, paying meticulous attention to detail is required. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary education and/or enrolled in the fall;
  • Knowledge of computerized and manual recordkeeping systems and the ability to maintain them;
  • Applying discretion and sensitivity skills when working with confidential information;
  • Hold a valid G2 or G drivers license;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Knowledge of safety in the workplace.

Information Centre Student

This is a seasonal position that will run from May 12 to August 29, 2025 (16 weeks) with typical work hours on varying days throughout the week, including weekends (35 hours/week). Generally 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This position has a $17.20/hour rate of pay.

Position Details

Student will assist visitors in our Information Centre, located in Wilberforce. You will provide information about the Municipality which includes travel directions, information about accommodations, restaurants, points of interest and things to do in the area. 

You must be very familiar with the Municipality of Highlands East (including local businesses and points of interest), possess excellent interpersonal, communication and social skills. Excellent customer service skills, ability to problem solve and attention to detail is a must. You must be knowledgeable or willing to learn about geocaching, mineral collection, trails, and special events in the Municipality. 

The successful candidate must possess excellent computer and professional telephone skills, ability to work independently and unaccompanied while on certain shifts. Some physical labour is required. Must have a valid “G2” driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

  • Stocking all brochures, racks, and organizing brochures
  • Updating events and other details
  • Mailing out packages
  • Photocopying
  • Database work
  • Light garbage clean up duties
  • Update Exploration Centres
  • Attend events and trade shows as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Summer Landfill Attendant

This is a seasonal position that will run from May 12 to August 29, 2025 (16 weeks) with typical work hours on varying days throughout the week, including weekends (35 hours/week). Requires working Saturdays. This position has a $17.20/hour rate of pay.

Position Details

Assist the Landfill Attendant with the following:

  • Direct the public as to where waste is to be deposited within the landfill site area and provide assistance when required;
  • Maintain and operate the landfill site in accordance with the Environmental Compliance Approval issued by the MECP;
  • Ensure hazardous materials are handled according to Ministry guidelines;
  • Maintain accurate records of incoming loads, monies received, log summaries, collect tipping fees and issue receipts;
  • Inspect the site daily to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance;
  • Clean landfill premises and around recycling bins, fence and gate areas on a daily basis;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • WHMIS Training;
  • First Aid Training considered an asset;
  • Any other related certificates would be considered an asset.

Summer Swim Program Lifeguards

This is a seasonal position that will run from June 30 to August 22, 2025 (8 weeks) with typical work hours on varying days throughout the week, including weekends dependent on pool duties or assignments. This position has a $17.20/hour rate of pay.

Position Requirements

  • Must be (16) years of age;
  • Possess current Bronze Cross Certificate;
  • Possess current Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR “C”;
  • Swim Instructors need to possess the Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor Certification;
  • Assistant Instructors need to possess the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Certification;
  • Possession of current NLS certificate for Pool is required for Swim Instructors/Assistant Instructors/Lifeguards;
  • Must have reliable transportation to the Cardiff Pool;
  • WHMIS Training would be considered an asset;
  • Any other related certificates would be considered an asset.
