Highlands East supports the safe disposal of electronics and batteries with our free Waste Electronics and Battery Recycling Programs.

Waste Electronics

Highlands East provides a diversion program for waste electronics. The follow items are accepted at all landfill and transfer stations (except Mumford Road), free of charge:

  • Amplifiers
  • Audio and video players
  • Cameras and digital cameras
  • Cell phones, pagers and PDAs
  • Computers and peripherals
  • Copiers, printers, scanners and fax machines
  • Monitors, televisions and video projectors
  • Radios, turntables and tuners
  • Receivers
  • Speakers
  • Telephones and answering machines

Battery Recycling Program

You can bring your old single use or cell phone batteries into various locations throughout Highlands East and drop them into a battery box.

Locations

Battery boxes are located at the Wilberforce and Gooderham Municipal Offices, the Library in Cardiff and all landfill sites and transfer stations.

Battery boxes accept the following battery types:

  • Alkaline sealed cell batteries found in flashlights, radios, clocks, pagers, etc.
  • Lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium, primary lithium and mercury batteries found in many cell phones and small electronics.

Large batteries not accepted

Batteries not accepted in the Battery Box program include batteries that are greater than 1kg, such as car batteries.
